Mr. Burrus is a proven labor leader who has fought long and hard for better working conditions in the American workplace. Membership is a critical component of the group dynamics and although there are many free-riders who refuse to pay their fair share of representational services, its leaders like Bill Burrus who prove that a rising tide does lift all boats. The free-riders would be greatly informed about the Union struggle if they would take the time to seclude themselves and read this hardcover book and learn what the past has done for the present, and what postal employees need to do collectively to carry the torch into the future.

This book is a must-read for all craft Union representatives to compare the cross craft issues and opportunities to work together as it benefits the membership. I did detect a little “hater-raid” towards Mail Handlers (smallest but best craft on the planet – I know the truth hurts, just relax).

Mr. Burrus is an outstanding communicator as seen in videos and from reading his opinion through various formats. He is indeed a postal icon who will take you on a journey through the civil rights era into this new millennium! He and the many others mentioned in his book practically built the house of labor, and he damn sure knows his way around it.

You need this book in your professional development library regardless of your Union or Management affiliation. This hardcover writing will give you a lot of ideas to prepare for battle by circling the wagon and defending your position.

Perhaps it’s a little late, but I will also be browsing the website for tickets to see the Boston Bruins since we will be visiting relatives there in March. It’s the one hockey team I have always wanted to watch on the ice up close and experience the action in person.  Besides, I’ve never been to Boston and think that taking in a hockey game will make it just that much more exciting.  While I am browsing the site, I may even get theater and concert tickets so that we can get out on the town while there.

Sailing just a few miles in the open waters while being close to nature with family or friends can be fun and a great way to get things off one’s chest, a different environment to communicate, learn interesting things about one another or just discuss current events. The time spent together over the years can be more than worth the investment. It doesn’t matter if it’s fishing, sailing or just kicking back while sitting still on the open waters the experience can be rewarding.

Since it is much easier for some folks to relax on the water, many boat owners candidly admit that time spent in this manner has given them many happy hours and memories that they cherish for a lifetime. In many instances, this type of socializing has greatly improved the quality of their lives.

Bill Burrus served as President of the American Postal Workers Union from November 2001 until November 2010 (nine years). He retired after a 53 year career as a postal employee and elected union official fighting to improve conditions for postal employees. Burrus was listed in Who’s Who in Black America and has appeared in numerous publications including Business Week, Jet, Black Enterprise, and Ebony in which he was listed each year among the 150 most influential African Americans. He was appointed to the Ohio Advisory Board of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission and was elected to the National Board of the A. Philip Randolph Institute. He served on the Federal Advisory Council on Occupational Safety and Health and on the Board of Directors of the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame. While representing American postal workers he was also elected as a representative of the Uni Global International Network.
